Cold read workflow

Make a playable choice in twelve minutes

Train the speed of understanding, cue pickup and adjustment instead of trying to perfect unfamiliar pages.

Start herePractise cold reading with a fixed time box. Spend three minutes on facts, three on the scene's turn, two on difficult language and four on a complete spoken read with another voice supplying the cues.

Use the clock as a training constraint

Cold reading is not rushed memorisation. It is the ability to find enough truth and structure to play the scene while still using the page intelligently.

A fixed 12 minute routine lets you compare sessions. Keep the time the same and change the material.

The twelve-minute protocol

  • Minutes 0 to 3: identify who, where, immediate circumstances and what happened just before.
  • Minutes 3 to 6: mark the main objective and the point where the tactic changes.
  • Minutes 6 to 8: speak names, technical phrases and difficult transitions aloud.
  • Minutes 8 to 12: run the scene once with the opposite roles spoken. Keep going after small errors.

Example: two pages from an unseen drama

Import the PDF without reading ahead. Check that Action has separated the scene and roles, choose your character and start the timer.

On the complete run, keep your eyes available during the other character's lines. Return to the page before your cue rather than after it. The training target is a living exchange with the text still in hand.

Review only what helps the next read

After the run, note one missed fact, one place your eyes dropped too long and one strong choice. Avoid a full performance critique. The next piece of unfamiliar material is the real second attempt.

Put another voice in the scene

Import a PDF, review the detected scenes and roles, choose your character and rehearse the opposite lines out loud. Action is free to download, with a seven-day Action Pro trial shown in the current UK App Store listing.
