Begin with a complete My Scenes report
Use the script extractor to find standard screenplay scenes containing the character name. My Scenes keeps the complete scene rather than reducing the result to dialogue blocks.
This gives you a fast working list with scene headings and source pages where the PDF exposes them.
Make the manual pass that software cannot replace
Search the original PDF for the character's full name, surname, first name and any alias used in action. Check crowd scenes, montages, photographs, phone calls and silent reactions separately.
- A silent appearance can matter even when there is no cue heading.
- An alias may change after a reveal.
- Action can mention a character who is not physically present.
- Flashbacks and dream sequences may need their own continuity note.
Turn the list into a playable map
For each confirmed appearance, note what the character knows at the start, what changes, what they try to do and where the scene leaves them. Keep this to one or two precise lines.
The map should reveal progression, not become a biography. If a note cannot affect the scene, leave it out.
Rehearse the scene, not the isolated entrance
Use the extracted report for planning, then return to the complete authorised pages. Read the action and hear the opposite lines before testing your own role.
A character journey becomes useful when it sharpens the immediate event, not when it forces every scene towards a predetermined result.
