Character line extraction

How to extract one character's lines from a script

Create a clean dialogue report without losing the cue, scene heading or original page reference you need for rehearsal.

Start hereUse a searchable screenplay PDF, identify the character from properly formatted cue headings, and keep each line with its scene and preceding cue. Check the result against the original before using it in rehearsal.

A useful line extract keeps the cue attached to every response.

Start with a searchable screenplay PDF

Open the PDF and try to select a few lines of dialogue. If the page behaves like a photograph, it needs optical character recognition before a browser tool can read the text reliably.

Use the cleanest current draft. An extract from an old version is worse than no extract because revised entrances and cuts become difficult to spot.

Create the character report privately

Open the free script line and scene extractor, choose the PDF and select the character exactly as the cue appears. The file is processed in the browser rather than uploaded to a server.

Choose My Lines for a compact dialogue report. Keep My Scenes when you need the complete action and other characters' dialogue around each appearance.

  • Check character names with suffixes such as V.O. or O.S.
  • Look for dual dialogue and unusual formatting.
  • Compare the number of scenes with your own first read.
  • Keep the original page number beside any line you mark or revise.

Put the cue back beside every response

A list of your own dialogue is useful for checking wording, but it is not enough for acting. Add the final meaningful phrase from the other character before each response.

Practise the pair aloud, then use the cue trainer to shuffle the order. If the line only arrives in sequence, the cue connection is not secure yet.

Check the extract before trusting it

Screenplay formatting is not perfectly standard. Compare the first line, final line, scene count and any dense dialogue passage with the original PDF.

Treat the report as a rehearsal aid, not a replacement for the authorised script. Return to the complete scene before making performance decisions.
