Decide what must be secure by morning

Read the whole scene once and mark entrances, major turns, difficult wording and the lines that carry essential facts. If the material is too large for exact recall, decide where the page can remain available rather than pretending every section has equal priority.

Accuracy matters, but a frantic actor who no longer listens has not solved the audition.

Use three focused evening blocks

• Block one: understand events and mark beats without trying to memorise.
• Block two: learn cue and response pairs, beginning with difficult transitions.
• Block three: run the complete scene aloud with the opposite roles spoken.
• Between blocks: take a real break away from the text and screen.

Stop while the work is still accurate

When every repetition becomes worse, more time is no longer more practice. Finish with a slow accurate pass, write down the three weakest cues and go to sleep.

Do not use the final exhausted run as your verdict on what you know. The morning retrieval test is the useful measure.

Test cold before reading again

In the morning, begin from each weak cue without rereading the whole scene. Repair only what fails, then complete one spoken run.
