Script listening languages

Rehearse in the language of your script

Choose the language Action listens for, with a separate setting saved for each script.

Start hereThe script language selector lets you choose the language you speak during rehearsal and self-tapes. This is a listening setting, not a translation of the app or your screenplay.

Choose for the scene, not your country

You might live in Britain and audition for a French-speaking role, or keep separate English and Spanish scripts on your phone. The useful setting is the language of the lines you are about to perform.

For a French scene, choose French. Action uses that choice when listening for your dialogue. It remembers the setting for that script; it does not choose automatically from your country or detect the language of the screenplay.

Which languages can I choose?

The selector shows the languages Apple’s speech recogniser reports as supported on your device, including regional choices where available. The exact list can vary with your device and iOS version.

Apple’s published Dictation list includes the following languages. This is a guide to Apple’s language coverage, not a guarantee that every option is available in Action on every device:

  • Arabic
  • Cantonese
  • Catalan
  • Croatian
  • Czech
  • Danish
  • Dutch
  • English
  • Finnish
  • French
  • German
  • Greek
  • Hebrew
  • Hindi
  • Hungarian
  • Indonesian
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Malay
  • Mandarin Chinese
  • Norwegian Bokmål
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Romanian
  • Russian
  • Shanghainese
  • Slovak
  • Spanish
  • Swedish
  • Thai
  • Turkish
  • Ukrainian
  • Vietnamese

Where to find the setting

Open your project and choose Script language. Search for the language you will speak, then select the appropriate regional option.

Choose Default to keep the original settings: US English for ordinary rehearsal and your device language for self-tapes. An explicit language choice applies to both modes for that script.

What stays under your control

Your script text and assigned reader voices stay as you set them. Choosing a listening language does not translate the screenplay, change the menus or select a new voice for the other characters.

Some recognition languages need an internet connection. Before relying on a new language for a full rehearsal, try a short scene and check the transcript and cue timing. Recognition quality and script-import accuracy can vary between languages and writing systems.
