Arrive prepared and still directable

Preparation is not pre-setting

Turning up without the words limits the work. Turning up with every pause and emphasis fixed can limit it too. Good independent preparation gives you command of the text while leaving room to receive direction and respond to a partner.

Separate what is factual in the scene from what is a choice. Names, events and cues need accuracy. Tactics, rhythm and emphasis need testing.

A scene-study loop between classes

Use each run to answer a different question. This prevents repetition from becoming mindless and gives you concise notes to bring back into the room.

• Text pass: confirm events, relationships and what changes.
• Cue pass: look away from your lines and retrieve from the other character's final words.
• Action pass: choose a playable verb and pursue it through one beat.
• Variation pass: make the opposite reasonable choice and see what the text supports.
• Reflection pass: note one discovery and one question for the next class.

Example: a paired assessment scene

After the first read, import the PDF and check the character split. Rehearse your role with the other part spoken, but do not imitate the delivery you expect from your class partner.

Try one run with a faster tempo and one with longer listening time. Bring both possibilities into rehearsal rather than presenting either as the answer.

Feedback is a prompt, not a grade

Action can generate notes and rehearsal feedback where available. Use them to create experiments. Your teacher, director and scene partner provide context the app does not have, including the training objective, the room and the shared work.
